Abstract: The Xizhou version of "Heavenly Match" (Tianxian Pei) is a product of a Han folk tale transmitted into Bai communities. Bai dabenqu performers engaged in an artistic re-creation by integrating local ethnic characteristics. While adapting and transplanting the story, they sang it in the Bai language, recorded it in Bai script, and employed traditional Bai performing arts. In the process of reinterpretation, they also infused the narrative with the sentiments and worldview of the Bai people, thereby "localizing" and "ethnicizing" a story of Han origin. As such, the Bai dabenqu "Heavenly Match" serves as a vivid example of the ethnic exchange, communication and integration. Through a comparative analysis of the text, lyrics, artistic forms, and ideological-cultural dimensions, this paper explores the deeper cultural logic behind the construction of a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.
